Initially, the CPTC had provided a pool of trained staff for the then Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation's live Morning Time programme. It was from this pool of trained media workers that staff were drawn for JAMAL and other organizations including the then budding film industry. By mid 1987 media workers were able to gain access to technical courses of the highest standard at the CPTC in:
- Scriptwriting for Television
- First Line Systems Maintenance for Broadcast Technicians
- Radio Broadcast Techniques and
- Practical Use of Audio-Visual Aid
In subsequent years, other courses were added including a Sound Technician's Course for the CPTC and JIS TV through a joint initiative with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). By 1991, the Training Division began offering expanded courses to media workers from the wider Caribbean.
Broadcast Engineers from four Caribbean territories including: Grenada, Dominica,
Trinidad & Tobago and St. Lucia were trained in First Line Systems Maintenance. Female news presenters and producers from Trinidad, Barbados, Belize, and Antigua were trained in Television News Presentation Techniques and Current Affairs Production (A UNESCO Funded Project).
The CPTC, a public sector multimedia facility, subsequently became the preferred institution for hands-on training in the media industry, providing services to the broadcast and allied industries in the areas of television production and multi-media training. The MTI intends to carry on the excellent tradition established by the CPTC of delivering the highest quality programming, training in media production, local, regional and international customers. In so doing, we seek to ensure that the cultural, educational and social values of Jamaica and the Caribbean are positively promoted, preserved and celebrated from generation to generation. |
